Wild Lettuce

We like to leave our best plants to produce seeds, seeds that may be harvested and set aside to plant at a later time, or seeds that fall spontaneously to the ground, germinate and grow in season.  We follow  the “Mother  Plant” concept where, given that one is working with open-pollinated plants, a single plant can produce enough seedlings…

First orange calendula flower of the year, a cheer First orange calendula flower of the year, a cheery hello from the most functional medicinal herb out there. Let us not forget, in the search for something new, our old friends, that keep us balanced while the world teeters askew. Do you perceive that shining visage? Shall we glory in its happiness or get lost in its shadow. Its up to us--moving forward with tiny good acts or sowing sorrow--the plants lead the way to a brighter morrow.Different varieties of calendula seeds available at strictlymedicinalseeds.com.

Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum). When milk thistle Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum). When milk thistle seed is purchased, it is bought first with the blood of the harvester, and next with common coinage. Inside that spiny capitula, a seed so smooth and nourishing, it embodies the perfect hepatoprotective agent. Besides healing the liver, the seed nourishes the vital essence. It is loaded with silymarin, that is true, and also bitters, oils, fatty acids, protein=amino acids, carbohydrate, fibre: a perfect food.
Male and Female stages of flowering Pelargonium (s Male and Female stages of flowering Pelargonium (scented geranium). Learning to differentiate the sexes is the first step in successful hand-pollination. You can see that they're sequential hermaphrodites--the vestigial filaments are still visible where they surround the stigma. This particular plant is sometimes marginalized, and yet the more I find out about it, the more I'm impressed. Not only is Pelargonium fertile ground for selection and development of new varieties, it is also one of the oldest plants on earth. The native range in S Africa has gone unchanged since the differentiation of Gondwana into the continents as we know them--at least 180 million years.
Yellow Gentian (Gentiana lutea), the queen of bitt Yellow Gentian (Gentiana lutea), the queen of bitters. With a lineage this long, one would expect perhaps a tail, but the potted plant I lifted yesterday, that was going out to some lucky gardener, looked much more like a fleur-de-lis. Very satisfying to grow and distribute plants that have such a potent history of usage, are everywhere protected in the wild, and can be grown and used by discriminating gardeners and medicine makers. Bitters such as this, a little goes a long ways.Plants available at strictlymedicinalseeds.com

Spilanthes. Time to start your seeds for the summe Spilanthes. Time to start your seeds for the summer patch. The "buzzy" reaction is on account of concentrations of alkylamides, which are a potent sialagogue (causes salivation) and antiinflammatory agent. As such this plant is really the dentifrice extraordinaire, disinfecting and tightening up the oral mucosa. I was cleaning out the shed yesterday and came across a bottle of commercial mouthwash and I was like "eeew!" (who bought that, anyway, what a waste!) Every year I put together my own--spilanthes buds and green coriander seeds whirred up in a blender with alcohol to cover, macerated, then pressed out in a tincture press, bottled and put next to the sink. I'd rather do all that than pay the dental bills. The pictures show three different spilanthes cultivar/species, all of which are available online at strictly medicinal seeds. Here's to your (dental) health!(Link in profile)
Snow in Williams on Mother's day, then this mornin Snow in Williams on Mother's day, then this morning, frost. The mountains are holding a load of snow and the creek is up. We usually think of May 15th as our likely last frost date, and its looking like this year will be typical to that. The Rhodiola rosea doesn't mind the late frosts--likes them in fact--and this is indicative of the resilience that the herb itself imparts to the human organism. Better resistance to the negative effects of stress-certainly a useful attribute these days! Pictured one of the plants we have available at strictly medicinal seeds. These are--solid.

Of all the seeds I ever got from China, back when Of all the seeds I ever got from China, back when it was allowed to import them, I think the wild harvested Paeonia obovata is my favorite. Now in full blossom, it reminds me of what can be gained by open access to world genetics. May the native land races run on!
